What Happened

On January 22, 2026, devastating landslides struck Tauranga, killing eight people. Six died at the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park at the base of Mauao — a campground owned and operated by Tauranga City Council (TCC). Two more died at a residential property on Welcome Bay Road, Pāpāmoa.

In the aftermath, TCC released a large tranche of documents via a dedicated online portal. Analysis of these documents, cross-referenced with media reporting, reveals significant inconsistencies and a troubling pattern of warnings that were not acted upon.
